Big Bush adviser Karen Hughes went on CNN's Late Edition on April 26 and said of John Kerry "He only pretended to throw his [medals]. Now, I can understand if, out of conscience, you take a principled stand, and you would decide that you were so opposed to this that you would actually throw your medals. But to pretend to do so -- I think that's very revealing." However, on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, columnist Tom Oliphant of the Boston Globe stated that Hughes had uttered a falsehood. Oliphant was a reporter on the scene of that protest in 1971 writing in the Boston Globe on April 27, "On the way to the fence where he [Kerry] threw some of his military decorations 33 years ago, I was 4 or 5 feet behind him." He goes on to disclose that Kerry did indeed throw them over a wall as a line of some 1,000 veterans did. Oliphant stated on the NewsHour that before the protest, Kerry had actually argued that the vets stack the decorations on a table, but that he lost the debate overwhelmingly with the other vets wanting to throw them over the wall.
