"Sentence first -- Verdict afterwards," screams the Queen at Alice in Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland."  The Queen continues, " ... Off with her head."

After Saddam's capture last December, Sen. Joe Lieberman made a similar statement. He said that Saddam Hussein should get the death penalty, but that there should be a fair trial first.

I keep hearing versions of that where both officials and men- and women-on-the-street say that Saddam should be executed, but he should have a fair trial first. The unintended irony is humorous in the otherwise decidedly humorless Iraq mess.
